This #TransAwarenessWeek we've created a series of infographics which explain some key terms related to gender, so we can all have a better understanding of the diverse experiences within the trans+ community💖

Cis or Cisgender refers to a person who identifies with the sex they were assigned at birth. Cisgender is the word for anyone who is not transgender.

[TW: responses to sexual violence] For this month's #MythBustingMonday we're looking at the myth that people scream, run or fight back when faced with sexual violence.

It’s really common for people who experience sexual violence to “freeze” in the moment. This does not mean that they consented, or that what happened was

🎃 Costumes are NOT Consent 👻

If you're are heading out to celebrate Halloween this year remember: no matter how spooky, scary, or bold the costume, always respect boundaries. Halloween should be fun for everyone - let's keep it that way by asking for consent and respecting personal boundaries. 💜

Today we were so excited to get our first donation from thebeautybanks with sanitary products, toothbrushes, deodorant, moisturiser & other beauty products! 💜

Beauty Banks receive surplus products from the beauty industry’s supply chain, donations from corporate brand partners, small businesses and members of the public. The products are then redistributed to frontline charities and community groups. You don’t need to be a charity to receive products.

A great charity which is going to be a great help for our service users going forward, we are very grateful 💜
Keep an eye out for our badges at stalls over #16daysofaction this November/December!

Today is #InternationalPronounsDay ! At The STAR Centre, we might ask you what your preferred pronouns are. We do this because:
💜It avoids any confusion or assumptions
💜It signals to trans, non-binary and gender non-conforming folks that this is a safe space
💜It gives us an opportunity to discuss how your gender may be relevant to you and your experiences
Today is the International Day for #RuralWomen, a significant occasion to recognise the vital role that rural women play in their communities and to address the unique challenges they face. One critical issue that deserves attention is the barriers rural women encounter when discussing sexual or gender-based violence.

The STAR Centre covers all of Ayrshire, including the Isle of Arran and Cumbrae. No matter where you live we will support you. When you feel ready to talk, we're here to listen.

To learn more about the barriers facing survivors of sexual violence in rural areas, you can watch RASASH 's appearance on BBC Alba's documentary
Sadly, The STAR Centre is currently unable to accept any new advocacy referrals as we focus on processing the existing ones and recruiting additional staff. We will reassess this situation in early January 2025, with the hope of reopening to new referrals at that time. Please feel free to check back with us in January if you still seek assistance in reporting a sexual crime to the police or need help deciding whether to report.

Other support available

If you have been raped or sexually assaulted in the last seven days, you can self-refer to Archway Glasgow by phoning 0141 211 8175. There, specially trained female professionals can offer you: a forensic medical examination, emergency contraception and pregnancy testing, screening for sexually transmitted infections and support if you choose, to give a full statement to the police.

The Rape Crisis Scotland helpline offers confidential short-term, crisis and initial support by phone, email, webchat and text. The phone, email and webchat support is free and texts will be charged at your normal network rate. Calls to the helpline do not show on your bill. The helpline supports people of all genders living in Scotland aged 13+ who have been affected by sexual violence. It doesn’t matter what happened or how long ago, and you don’t have to talk about anything you don’t want to. We support survivors, as well as family, friends and supporters.

🌍 International Safe Abortion Day 🌍

Today, The STAR Centre stands in solidarity with survivors and advocates for every individual's right to safe, legal, and compassionate abortion care. In Scotland, we have supportive legislation, but there is still work to be done.

For survivors of sexual violence, accessing abortion services can be fraught with additional challenges. These can include navigating complex legal and medical systems, dealing with stigma and judgment, and facing logistical hurdles like finding transportation, and appropriate care. It's crucial that we remove these obstacles and ensure that survivors receive the support they need throughout the process.

We need to work together to ensure that every person, regardless of their circumstances, has access to compassionate and stigma-free care. No one should face additional barriers when seeking to make decisions about their own body. 💜

Happy #WorldContraceptionDay ! Did you know that talking about contraception is actually one of the many ways you can practice consent? Talking about condoms, dams, pills, implants, gels etc. can feel intimidating or awkward, but it is actually a way you can show those you're having sex with that their safety, pleasure and feelings matter.

Decisions around contraception should be:
🚨Made without pressure
🚨Specific to time, place and method
🚨Informed
🚨Something that feels good/right
